I can’t prove this, but I’m pretty sure wines have faces. It starts with something like ki, that vibe people give off. You know when you just feel someone standing outside the door? Or you meet a stranger and somehow know whether they like you or they’re wary of you? And if you hang around people in the same line of work long enough, their faces start looking alike. After years of drinking wine, I realized the same thing happens with bottles. The wine, the face of the person who made it, and the label all give off the same feeling. It’s uncanny how well they match up.

A person’s face changes. The way you’ve lived gets written into it. Doesn’t matter if you’re well off or barely getting by, or whether you’ve got a big title or none at all. You look at someone and you feel like you can tell whether they deal with people in good faith, with suspicion, or with some angle in mind. That’s part of what we call “character.” A face is everything that’s happened to you, added up.

Wine’s the same way. Some producers hold an old vintage back for years before they release it, and those bottles have an age you can’t pin on the number printed on the label. The wine’s been sealed up since bottling, changing in ways nobody can see. You can wipe the bottle down all you want, and that time still shows. Same with the empty bottles they leave on display in restaurant cellars. Their labels seem to age faster, like the years hit them harder. So I started thinking wine has its own energy, just like people do, and that the energy somehow rubs off on the label. If that’s true, the label is the link between what’s in the bottle and us. It’s the wine’s face.

So these days, when I look at a label, I can picture the person behind it. A laid-back, down-to-earth producer? The label’s usually rough and rustic, with the lettering and the artwork all blurring together. They seem a little eccentric, but the wine’s strangely good. A perfectionist’s label is plain white with simple, clean type, and the wine’s like that too: no frills, all depth and texture. Honestly, in all my years of tasting, the feeling I got from a winemaker’s face has almost never been different from the feeling I got from their wine.

Look, judging wine scientifically matters, of course. But picking up on a wine’s vibe and imagining who made it is plain fun. So next time you pour a glass, pull up the winery’s website and take a look at the person who made it, then look again at the label. See if the wine matches what you picked up. I bet you’ll find a little more in that glass.
