Despite boasting the most glittering Europe-based squad in its history, Korea turned in a dismal display against a South African side built mostly on home-based league players, a clear failure of the manager's tactics and squad management.

Losing to a must-win opponent and now risking even the round of 32 lays bare the grim state of Korean football. To gain a Pot 2 seeding and draw weak sides like South Africa, yet still fail to capitalize, is an indelible stain. Starting Hwang Hee-chan, whose form had not recovered after injury and a poor club season, left the Lee Tae-seok–Hwang Hee-chan partnership unable to exert any influence down the left throughout the match.

Korea never shut down what the opponent wanted, pushing up only to be broken open in behind, and ceded control. Dropping Lee Jae-sung weakened the press, while starting Son on the bench backfired. With long balls plainly coming, the defense kept conceding one-on-ones, slow to recover and watching rather than winning the ball back.

Even while trailing, Korea clung to a back three. Unlike Japan, whose defenders push forward, the side held a flat line with no attacking support, and however hard Lee Kang-in battled alone, the attack shrank to a monotonous reliance on his kicks.

This defeat is not the failure of a single match but the accumulated result of Korean football's long, slow collapse. Long before the World Cup, concerns had already been raised about both the manager-appointment issue and the team's faltering form, yet they were brushed aside in the belief that everything would be fine once the team qualified and delivered results. That neglect has now come back as a defeat this crushing.

This dismal showing is also sending negative ripples through countless stakeholders in the sports industry. And it is not a matter of poor results alone. It is the product of a structural malady. For too long, the association has lavished titles and authority on those whose hunger for recognition outran theircompetence, putting power and self-interest ahead of any sense of responsibility. Those appointed this way tend to carry egos far out of proportion to their abilities, and they end up occupying positions for which they are ill-suited, to the detriment of both the association and its mission. (And this is by no means unique to the football association.) The association must now break with these entrenched practices. Unless it corrects the asymmetry of accountability, in which those who wield the most power stand the farthest from answering for the outcome, the same failure is bound to repeat itself. This failure must become the starting point of a reckoning that breaks the vicious cycle.
