- Drones set to deploy to safeguard schools
- System offers new tools to foil gunmen on campus
- From 2022 until 2024, there were 1,000 school shootings across the country, 10 times more than just a decade earlier. And about 800 people were killed or wounded in those shootings. ● With brutal realities like that, schools are continually looking for additional ways to protect their students and staff, and a Florida school is about to add another layer of protection. ● Deltona High School has been selected to be part of a pilot program that provides drones equipped to disrupt a school shooter in as little as 15 seconds after the assailant begins to wield a gun. It can take three to eight minutes for a police officer to arrive in a similar situation. ● The Campus Guardian Angel system Deltona High will use in a few months deploys nonlethal drones immediately upon receiving an emergency alert, delivering real-time video to law enforcement on their phones and computers, and using sirens, flashing lights and pepper spray pellets to distract and even stop a shooter. ● The drones can also be piloted to slam into an assailant and do very rapid and distracting loops around an attacker’s head. They are designed to save lives by being a constant obstacle and distraction for a shooter.
- Rather than replace any law enforcement function, Campus Guardian Angel drones are designed to help buy officers precious time to save lives.
- At Deltona High School on May 1, a Volusia Sheriff's deputy demonstrates how police could work with a drone during an active shooting on campus.
